Caring for bathroom fixture finishes
Bathrooms are hard on finishes: steam, hard water and cleaning products all take a toll. A few habits keep fixtures looking new.

Daily and weekly
- Wipe faucets and shower trim dry after use, especially in hard-water areas.
- Clean weekly with mild soap and warm water and a soft cloth.
- Rinse off soap and shampoo residue, which dulls finishes over time.
What to avoid
- Abrasive pads and powders.
- Bleach, ammonia and acidic cleaners such as vinegar, unless the maker approves them.
- Spraying tile cleaner directly onto fixtures. Protect them or rinse right away.
Finish by finish
- Unlacquered brass: it will darken. Polish with a brass cleaner to brighten it, or leave it to age evenly.
- Chrome: shows spots. Dry it to keep it bright.
- Nickel: hides spots well. Avoid harsh chemicals.
- Matte black: wipe dry to prevent pale mineral marks.
Hard water
If mineral deposits build up on showerheads, soak the nozzles following the manufacturer's directions, or rub soft rubber nozzles by hand. A water softener protects every fixture in the house.
Warranty and care sheets
Keep the care and warranty documents for every fixture. Many warranties exclude damage from harsh cleaners. We send each manufacturer's care guide with every quote.
